“SPOTLIGHT” On Bernice Reveles

Today we have a “SPOTLIGHT” on an up and coming musician that is ready to blow up the music charts with her passion and beautiful voice.
I was so impressed by her and how this interview turned out. Atthe end you will find out how you can get a FREE download of her latest song. So check out the “SPOTLIGHT” and let us know what you think!!!!!!!
RIALTO NOW – When and why did you start playing?
BERNICE – I started playing guitar when I was 14 years old. I had been playing piano here and there, but guitar had always intrigued me. Just being able to put a couple of chords together and adding some lyrics is just amazing to me… AND it’s way more convenient than a piano!
RIALTO NOW – Is there a moment that you can remember that drove you to sing?
BERNICE – When did it click that you liked singing? – My Aunt Lorena. She use to sing around the LA area for years when she was young. I remember at one New Years Eve family party, when I was 5, she was singing with a trio that plays Spanish music and I just stood there in complete AWE. I saw how everyone was so focused on her and how confident she was. Since then, I knew I wanted to be a singer.
RIALTO NOW – Tell us a little about yourself.
BERNICE – I’m 18 years old. Recent graduate from A.B. Miller High and currently attending Mt. SAC. I’m a singer-songwriter from Fontana, CA. I’ve lived around the country…literally. I lived in Texas, South Carolina but born and raised in Southern California and I’m a complete optimist about life.

————————————————————————————————————————————————
RIALTO NOW – What role does FAMILY play in your music?
BERNICE – They play a HUGE role in my music! Without their love, support and wisdom I’d be totally lost. They’re my soul and I’m never without them.
RIALTO NOW – Which instruments do you play?
BERNICE – I play guitar and piano. My guitar is always with me on stage. I plan on learning drums next…if my brother is willing to teach me haha!
RIALTO NOW – What other producers, songwriters and/or artists do you see as your primary inspirations?
BERNICE – Definitely Alanis Morissette and Taylor Swift. I just love how they don’t care what people say or think of them. They just do their thing with confidence and I idolize them for that fact.
RIALTO NOW – What was it like to be signed with Moe Tan Records?
BERNICE – It was scary, exciting and amazing all at the same time! They’re just genuinely good people. Their positive vibes and happiness just make me feel like I’m family. I’m just so excited to see what is to come for all of us in the future!
RIALTO NOW – What was your favorite performance so far? What made it so special?
BERNICE – It was the Thai Festival on Hollywood Blvd in April 2011. All my closest friends and family were there to cheer me on. They all wore my “Baby, I Like You” T-shirts and promoted me. The crowd was wild and just awesome. It was overall an amazing day, filled with amazing memories.
RIALTO NOW – If someone told you right now to pick one venue and artist to sing/play with what would that be?
BERNICE – Hands down the Sala Apolo in Barcelona, Spain with Taylor Swift!
RIALTO NOW – What is the first song ever sung? Do you have secret craving? fave food?
BERNICE – I was 3 or 4 and I sang Selena’s Bidi Bidi Bom Bom to my family. – Forever will be craving Hot Cheetohs and raspberry iced tea. – PIZZA and SUSHI!
RIALTO NOW – What is your favorite movie?
BERNICE – I have a couple. It’s too hard to choose! But top tree are; The Notebook, (500) Days Of Summer and Pretty In Pink.
RIALTO NOW – Do you have any pets? Dog person or cat?
BERNICE – I’m a dog person. My grandma has a dog, that I like to call mine as well. His name’s Yogi and he’s a North American husky.
RIALTO NOW – What was your first job?
BERNICE – Well, I’m currently experiencing my first job. I volunteer at my mom’s job that is a non-profit organization that service, support and advocacy for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.
RIALTO NOW – Do you have any loves, other then music?
BERNICE – I have a love for traveling and photography. One day I want to be able to travel to different parts of the world, try different things and take risks!
RIALTO NOW – What do you like to do for fun outside of working on music?
BERNICE – Spending time with my family and friends, hit Huntington Beach, go to concerts/shows  and just cruise and travel around Southern California.
RIALTO NOW – How do you describe your music to people?
BERNICE – To make it easier for people to understand I like to say it’s like if Taylor Swift and Katy Perry had a baby! haha! I guess it would be considered “pop” music but with my own little twist into it. I am always open for new things!
RIALTO NOW – How often and for how long do you practice?
BERNICE – I practice everyday. You’ll usually catch me playing guitar or writing a song.
RIALTO NOW – Do you have an charities or causes that are close to your heart?
BERNICE – I have two that are close to my heart. One is, To Write Love On Her Arms. They are a cause that spreads awareness for depression, self-harm and suicide. My grandpa took his life away in 2009 and we’ve been following them ever since. They’re very inspirational & have helped us to cope with his lost. The second is the Tourettes Syndrome Association. My little brother Jay was diagnosed with Tourettes 2 years ago and it’s been hard on everyone…but for him, I can only imagine. He’s such an inspiration and a strong kid. He lives everyday normally and doesn’t let it stop him. I love that kid!

What Does Carter High School and UCLA Have In Common?

Article from San Bernardino Sun Newspaper

RIALTO – On the surface, there seems to be little in common between the football programs at UCLA and Carter High School.

During the summer, Carter senior lineman Kenny Clark attended camps at UCLA, USC and Washington. He got offers from Washington and UCLA, and interest from USC.

But he gave a verbal commitment to go to UCLA in part because of a similarity between UCLA and Carter.

“I want to be part of building something,” Clark said. “Like we’ve done here at Carter.”

Clark was a key player on both the defensive and offensive lines for last year’s

Carter High School offensive lineman works a play during football practice in Rialto. (Gabriel Luis Acosta/Staff Photographer)

best-ever Lions squad that went 11-2 and advanced to the CIF-SS Central Division semifinals.

He wants a lot more this year.

“I want to go 14-0 and win CIF,” he said. “I don’t like losing.”

The 6-foot-2, 297-pound Clark seems to have two sides: soft-spoken and good-natured off the field, but intense on the field and in workouts.

That’s the only reason to explain Clark refusing to rest on his laurels.

“Last year, he was listed at 280 (pounds),” Carter coach Alex Pierce said. “He filled out in the weight room. He had 36 college offers and he could’ve just coasted. But he’s got a great work ethic.”

He certainly wasn’t coasting when he spent most of his days this summer working out from 5-7 a.m.

And the reason for that? Not necessarily what you’d think. He’s not focused on college or the NFL. Rather, he wants to help his Carter team win.

“Unless someone brings it up, you wouldn’t know I have a scholarship because I don’t talk about it,” Clark said. “That (UCLA) will happen next year. Right now, I’m focused on this year.”

He’s focused on this year, but he says he’s not focused on personal statistics. A year ago, he had 6 1/2 sacks, 36 tackles and two fumble recoveries. He may be bigger and stronger this year, but can expect to see a steady diet of two blockers.

As an offensive lineman, there aren’t accurate statistics to measure your worth. The only one is how the offense runs and last year area Player of the Year Gaylon Maxie rushed for 1,905 yards for Carter.

But Clark’s athletic talents aren’t limited to the football field. As a heavyweight wrestler last season, Clark advanced to the CIF State Championships.

Despite a future in football, Clark says he still plans to wrestle for his senior season this winter.

“I started wrestling my sophomore year,” Clark said. “Coach (Kevin) Hennessy got me to wrestle and I really like it. If something goes wrong, it’s on you.

“Everybody is questioning me … asking me why I want to keep wrestling. But I’m careful.”

His focus may be on his senior year at Carter, but make no mistake – he wants to play in the NFL.

“That’s what I’ve always wanted, to go to the NFL,” he said. “I never really had a college team in mind.”

He’s certainly got a college team now. But first, he has a high school team to worry about.

Re-Cap on Coffee with the Chief

On July 10th people in the community met with Chief of police Tony Farrar, Captain Randy De Anda & Volunteer Judy Roberts to talk about issues concerning the residents in the city of Rialto.

It was a nice showing of new and old faces to the coffee with the chief events.

Chief Farrar started the meeting with updating us on some of the recent goings ons within the department.

  • Nationwide grant giving police departments ability to hire additional police officers. There were 117 total positions nationwide and Rialto PD received 5. These positions will fund for 3 years for each position. When asked what will happen to the officers once the grant money is over Chief Farrar stated that officers moving to other departments, retirements would take place over the years to allow these officers to be ready and working so that they can fill the gaps. This grant is geared to give military veterans the ability to find work.
  • Rialto PD has done some aggressive hiring and we have 8 candidates going through the sheriffs academy 3 will graduate in September 6 started on 7-9-12 and there is one lateral position. This hiring will help fill the gaps created by the mass retirements a year and a half ago.
  • Sgt Gibbs will be the person in charge of building up our Reserve Program. The reserve program is where people who are sworn officers donate time working in our department to help us put more boots on the ground. Sgt Gibbs is a Background Investigator and will be able to handle the backgrounds on these prospective officers and bolster this important program.
  • On July 10th Chief Farrar went before city council to obtain final approval on our part in the new regional SWAT Program. THis means we will combine resources from Colton, Fontana & Rialto to share the resources and save money on certification, training and equipment maintenance.
  • Chief spoke about COP Link a regional program where law enforcement agencies all over the county can more quickly and efficiently share information on suspects, crimes and other information that may span from city to city.
  • Chief spoke about the awesome things our SCAT team has been doing in the city and county, like the POT bust in the corn field.

There were issues brought up by the residents as well They ranged from aggressive panhandlers and pushy homeless making it hard for people to shop in Rialto. The amount of illegal activity in our parks in the late hours and the need for posted park hours that the police and community could enforce. The amount of young children being put on Rialto Streets to sell candy and other items in the late hours of the night. Chief Fararr made mention of the need of a permit local businesses would obtain to have the ability to walk and solicit homes in the city of Rialto.

These meeting are a great way for you to be able to meet other people who care for this community. This venue is the best way to get your questions answered and know the Police Department heard you.

If you have an issue, problem or concern this is where you will get answers.

One comment that came up that started a little debate was, Do you think the Chief of police should live in the same city he works in? Why or Why Not? Post your answers here or on the Facebook or Twitter sites and get the dialogue going.

Area 1 Command Meeting Review

Hello readers here is our review of the area command meeting in area 1. This is Lt Karol’s second meeting since his promotion and assignment as area 1 commander for Rialto. Lt. Karol ran this meeting alot like one of our favorite retired Lt Crispin, the meeting was very comfortable and flowed nicely.

Lt Karol Area 1 Commander opening up his 2nd meeting

Topics were well covered and residents were given and opportunity to comment and vent without being chased out of the room because they didn’t entirely agree with the presenter. Not every presenter spoke because the presenters that did speak were important to the people sitting in the audience.

I wasnt entirely sure how the chosen venue would suit this meeting when I first heard about it, but after the meeting was over the only critique is that it was hard to find out which room the meetin was in because Sunrise Church is such a large facility. Proper signage would help negate this issue. The people who attend there who were there for bible studies and other groups were very nice, hospitible and helped you find the right room.

Larry Decrona Owner & Managing partner in aquisition and Property Managment

First up was Larry from Superior Graffitti Removal – They are the new graffitti removal company and they are promising to do more for less. How many of you have ever paid less for for a service or product and been at all happy with the end result? My fear is that they will relize this city is more work than originally factored and come back to council looking for money &/or allow their service drop off due to the additional expense of serivcing our city. They promise next day service & a national reporting serivce that is free to the city. They say that if you call on graffitti and they cant remove it or refuse to because of some strange rules they will call you and inform you. Well I debunked that this week I called on three spots this week no removal and no call. Go to the community Graffitti page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Rid-Rialto-of-Graffitti/216882198324244 give it a “LIKE” and join the discousion.

They say they are the largest graffitti removal company in LA County, like that was a badge of honor. LA County has a reputation of throwing bad money after good and has graffitti blanketing their communities. Where is the graffitti removal response? You can find them at http://4superior.com .

Scott Enoch with City of Rialto Parks and Rec

Scott Enoch with Parks and Rec seemed a little unprepared for the types of questiones he recived. He spoke about the cataloge that the city puts out to inform the community about services they provice and annonced the dedication cerimony at Freguson park that will take place Saturday July 14th. Whats funny is the football feilds wont be stripped until just before the dedication and grand opening of the park because they want it to look nice, yet the park is already open. In my opinion it sends the message that the city dosent care about the comunity just the press and media that wont show up for the event. The only time media covers Rialto is for bad things very rare to hear about positive things in the Sun or ABC 7 in reference to Rialto.

The questions Mr Enoch wasnt ready for was about the violence, crime, debachury and filth that currently resides in our parks. People complained about the janitorial services that Mr Enoch had never met or seen in his life. People described to cleaning staff as 2 mexican ruffians pulling up in a lifted black truck and doing very little cleaning. Bathrooms cleanliness was also a issue sticky and trashed almost all the time, waste baskets with busted out bottoms, gangs taking over our parks and much more.

If you want to know more about our parks you are directed to the parks and rec commision meeting 3rd tuesday of every month. Also if you have issues with broken or damaged park equipment call public works and or Parks and Rec.

Sergio is with Public Works and is a Traffic Engineer

Public works was next and they had a traffic engineer out to speak to the public. 2 new traffic signals were installed 1 at Valley/Cactus and the other on Rverside Ave in front of Fire Station 202. Cactus south bound is sceduled to be widened, Ayala north bound will be widened, Linden north bound to Carter and a new signal will begin the planning phases at Linden and Riverside Aves. This intersection is the source of many accidents and fatilities in the past and is well over due. Also Pepper will be extended to the 210 freeway.

Mike Story is the City Manager addressing some issues within the city

Last was Mike Story the city manager for the city of Rialto. First off read his monthly report its full of great information. Mr Story spoke about some of the issues that were being brought up. In and Out in Rialto will happen at its latest is 2013, the city is getting leaner but its finding ways to to the same with less. Mr Story is a straight shooter with a positive outlook as long as we can remain together during the lean years. Super Walmart is finally moving along, Mr Story spoke about ways his department is making Rialto more business freindly without giving away the farm. San Bernardino has done just that with the new Amazon Wharehouse, Kohls Distribution center, Regal Cinema project in downtown and many more they earn so little on tax revenues and have nothing to pay for toads damaged by truck traffic or crime that follows these developments. Mr Story is using quick building permits, defered project payments and more to help developers.

Finally Lt Karol closed the meting with some recent crime trends in the area and city:

  • Ding Dong Break In – Somone comes up to your door and knocks and rings the bell if none awnsers another person access your backyard smashes in your slider and ransacks your home in and out in about 2 mins. If your home awsner from inside you dont have to awnser the door but with them knowing somones home they normally move on.
  • Front Door Kick In – Yes its back they caught 2 males who had been victimizing homes on the south end of area 1. Key here is to report people that dont belong in your neigborhood.
  • Into the Garage – Do you leave a garage door opener in your car? If yes then you could be a waiting victim of this breakin.

Make better choices

Also all of these board memebers have been given a list of interview questions for the Rialto Now blog and none have returned them its almost been a year. They don’t like to be questioned, and the funny part it was a softball interview nothing to telling of them. Only memeber Edgar Montes and member Martinez have even said they would complete them. Any resident looking to make their voice heard on our blog please go to www.rialtonow.wordpress.com and comment on the most recent or current story that you would like to have a story posted and we will email you with the nessicary information.

As I watched the April 11 Rialto school board meeting, I wasn’t surprised to see the board vote 4-1 (board member Montes voting no) to approve payment for board member Joanne Gilbert, who missed the March 28 board meeting where the board voted to issue pink slips to the classified workers.

Gilbert is not the first board member to be paid even though they didn’t attend the board meeting; board member Michael Ridgway last year was paid for two board meetings he didn’t attend.

This board also approved the superintendent’s contract where he is earning roughly $300,000 a year, including benefits, retirement and car allowance.

This board also approved for 32 staff members to attend a leadership training costing the district more than $65,000.

This board also has set policy that each board member has three minutes to give their board report, all because board member Montes is asking questions.

This board also requires anyone who wants to speak during public comment to submit a card no later than 6:45 p.m. before the meetings and it has to be filled out (name, address, etc.), which violates the Brown Act.

This board also seems not to understand the purpose of the Brown Act and would prefer that board member Montes ask all questions behind closed doors.

Residents of the Rialto school district, three board members are up for re-election. Let’s make better choices.
